The Ryokan Collection Welcomes a New Member -
FUFU Nikko, a Natural Retreat with Noble Roots
The Ryokan Collection is delighted to welcome a new member to its group of fine ryokan - FUFU Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. Situated on a ravine within walking distance of the famed Nikko Toshogu Shrine and the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, this elegant new property recreates the borderless refinement of the Meiji Period with a design that combines traditional Japanese natural iconography and imported luxuries.
Experiences
Live Like a Tokugawa
Situated on land that was once part of the imperial villa next door, FUFU Nikko takes its aesthetic from that royal retreat, with its distinctive mix of traditional Japanese luxury and international influences from the turn of the 20th century. Imagine rooms that combine walls of delicate silk yushoku-monyo embroidery with the complex geometric patterns of European parquet flooring, for example. The buildings of the villa were once home to a branch of the famed Tokugawa samurai family, whose powerful patriarch Ieyasu is enshrined at Nikko Toshogu. As guests of FUFU Nikko, visitors get exclusive access to rooms at the shrine usually reserved for the Tokugawa descendants.
Taste Unexpectedly Worldly Kaiseki
Like royalty who embody the ideals of the country while exuding effortless composure abroad, the cuisine at FUFU Nikko spans worlds without losing its intrinsic Japaneseness. Sourcing from a farm in the prefecture that also supplies the imperial household, the chef creates menus blending kaiseki and haute cuisine, all presented on exquisitely decorated porcelain and lacquerware fit for the emperor's table. Kaiseki's big three delicacies—sea urchin, squid ink, and konowata—dance with the West's three showstoppers—caviar, foie gras, and truffles—to create delightful surprises like sesame-dressed hijiki seaweed noodles topped with caviar and cauliflower or fresh fig wrapped in konbu-brined tilefish sashimi.
Discover Nikko's Natural Beauty
Perched atop a ravine and bordered by the lush greenery of the Nikko Botanical Garden, FUFU Nikko is surrounded in all seasons by the natural beauty that has beckoned generations of Japanese nobility. From the hot spring baths in particular, the gentle susurrus of the Tamozawa River provide a relaxing background music for the yearly performance the property's ancient cedars and maples as they change from pleasing bouquets of verdancy to riotous garments of golds and reds. Even in the snow-decked depths of winter, the views of the natural world from the glass-walled lounge are stunning, though best enjoyed next to the fireplace with a hot toddy or one of the FUFU Nikko's original tea blends.
